CES 2013 – My highlight from this year’s exposition: better than Apple’s retina screens and Color Reference monitors.

As expected, this new edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (aka CES) has been less than exciting. This will certainly be the year of the fitness gadgets. Everyone is trying to take on Fitbit and a few other pioneers in this domain. I will spare you the infinite list of low cost tablets to concentrate of what is, in my view, the highlight of the show for colorists in quest for a new reference display.
The Power of Grading: understand why color correcting can take a long time

Color correcting a shot takes time. Depending on the expectations (and needs) of your clients (directors & producers alike), it can be a relative short job but for the most demanding, this can turn to be quite time consuming. Around the ‘The Hobbit’: Color Correcting ‘The Lord Of The Ring’

Have you already seen Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit? If so, you surely remember its first trilogy ‘The Lord of the Rings”. In the DVD & Blu-ray
sets (Amazon still offers them at a great price!), you can find a very long and interesting behind-the-scene of the three movies but one part is of most interest to us, colorists: the grading of the movie.
Time Machine, Time Capsule and a sparsebundle file that refuse to be erased.

Time Machine is a great tool that Apple provides in Mac OS X (10.5 and up) for easily backing up your system: select your computer, select the disk you want to backup to and turn it on. That’s it and your system is backed up on an hourly basis. But when something goes wrong, it is awfully hard to troubleshooting it. That’s what happened to me with my Time Capsule.
